City of Kupferberg faces financial challenges with extensive renovation projects ahead

With a per capita debt of 117 euros from 159,000 euros of loans still to be repaid and a reserve of 1.2 million euros, the city of Kupferberg is currently in a good position. It probably won’t stay that way. “It is now time to invest, even if this means taking out new loans and no longer benefiting from stabilization aid,” said VG Treasurer Christopher Buß at the most recent city council meeting.

The renovation of the school building is behind schedule and costs a total of 4.6 million euros minus almost 2.9 million euros in subsidies. In addition, a new vehicle must be purchased for the fire department. The kindergarten also needs to be renovated piece by piece or even rebuilt. This is probably 90,000 euros less trade tax, but slightly more allocations. The treasurer believes it is possible that Kupferberg will be able to manage without any new debt this year – but this would require almost all of the reserves to be liquidated. The cost-calculating facilities water, sewage and cemetery currently have a surplus, Buß also announced. However, he announced one-off contributions at the expense of the citizens for necessary larger investments in water supply and disposal.

Schoolhouse is the largest project

The budget for 2024, which the city council has now approved, amounts to a total of 7.7 million euros in income and expenditure. Of these, almost 2.2 million are in the administrative budget for ongoing operations and a good 5.5 million in the administrative budget for investments. The biggest expenditure this year is: 3.7 million euros for the renovation of the school building, 1.26 million euros for water and wastewater, 212,000 euros for road construction and 100,000 euros for the kindergarten. The treasure trove expects stable expenses over the next few years. Investments in the wealth budget have probably peaked at 5.9 million last year and 5.5 million this year. It will drop to 1.7 million euros next year when the work on the school building is completed.
