Report dated August 16, 2024

The adult education center (vhs) Herne will start the fall semester with the new program on Monday, September 9, 2024. A total of 612 courses will be offered in the second half of the year. The semester ends on Friday, January 24, 2025.

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, Dagmar Vogel, the head of the vhs, presented the new program, which is even clearer with its new layout and presents even more information. She was supported by her colleagues Natalie Dilekli from the culture and cooking program areas, Monika Remlinger, who represented the languages area, and Iwona Jarczewski, who as head of the area spoke about courses in the area of basic education and school qualifications.

On the cover photo for the fall semester program: Herne course leader Erika Herrera Hernandez in a dance pose. She has been teaching Spanish for ten years, introducing Chilean and Spanish cuisine and exuding Latin American joie de vivre in her salsa courses. She represents all of the adult education center’s lecturers.

“With this year’s cover, we would like to express our appreciation for our more than 400 lecturers. On the basis of their commitment, expertise and dedication, we can provide a high-quality, diverse and innovative educational program twice a year,” explains Dagmar Vogel.

She went on to say that the society and politics program refers to a constantly changing world. There is a workshop on dealing with barroom slogans like “You should still be allowed to say that” and a reading by a renowned journalist from the “Jüdische Allgemeine” Gerhard Haase-Hindenberg: “I have never met a Jew. Life stories from Germany”. “We want to counter the threat of extremism and anti-Semitism with information and education,” emphasized the head of the adult education center.

Monika Remlinger presented the range of courses in the languages program. In the new semester, interested parties can choose from 15 different languages. In addition to classics such as English, French and Spanish, the adult education center also offers languages that are rarely taught in the region, such as Turkish, Thai and Norwegian. The total of 105 courses take into account various course formats, from individual courses to group courses in the morning, afternoon, evening or at the weekend, to one-week compact courses.

Natalie Dilekli promoted a new feature in the culture program. There is an after-work painting course for portraits. It is designed for people who want to be creative outside of work but don’t have time for evening-long appointments.

Other new courses include writing applications with the help of artificial intelligence, a graffiti course for adults and a cocoa ceremony with tasting and mindfulness exercises.
