Urban learning and support offers during the holidays are very well received
Urban learning and support offers during the holidays are very well received Due to the corona pandemic, school lessons and many extracurricular learning offers could not take place as usual in the past school year. The city of Hamm therefore already considered in the spring how to make up for these learning delays and create offers for schoolchildren during the summer holidays and beyond. The number of registrations now confirms the city is right: there is very good demand for the intensive holiday training “FiT in German”, the extracurricular offer “Extra time for learning” and the learning support “Basic skills and language” via the education and participation package.
“The number of registrations confirms our approach of continuing and relaunching learning opportunities at an early stage,” says Dr. Britta Obszerninks. “We found that the number of registrations means that the capacities are almost exhausted.” In concrete terms, this means that 80 newly immigrated children and young people can take part in the “FiT for German” courses. Cancellations had to be made for 13 pupils and they will be sent out these days. “The offer will also be available in the coming holidays, since it has been established in Hamm since 2018,” explains Karin Diebäcker, Head of the Office for School Education. All the planned offers of the “Extra Time for Learning” program, which takes place in the fifth and sixth week of vacation and will be offered for the first time this year, are taking place – and are making a further offer of support for almost 200 students. There are still a few remaining places available at four primary schools and the Martin Luther School. All parents who have received a rejection can register their child again. The following applies to new registrations: Whoever registers first gets the space.
“The learning opportunities are not classic tutoring lessons. Rather, they offer a colorful mix of play, fun and learning, so that the holiday idea is not neglected either, ”explains Dr. Obszerninks about the organization of the days and the concern that the recovery time could be neglected. “Many parents are grateful that learning backlogs cannot be made up in the current school year and have therefore registered their children for playful learning support during the holidays.” an offer from the Hammer Spielvereinigung, each with its own application.
In close cooperation with everyone involved (learning providers, schools, parents), the employees of the Hamm educational support team at the municipal job center have so far been able to approve 349 applications to 29 schools. The first pupils have been playing and learning with other children and young people since the start of their holidays. The providers of extracurricular learning support have exhausted all their creativity and their possibilities to convey learning content in a playful way: from themed weeks such as “Knight’s Castle” to more musical focuses in the area of dance and singing to exciting math puzzles and self-assertion offers is something exciting with it. Lydia Schillner from the Hamm communal job center draws a positive interim conclusion: “I am very satisfied with the wide range of offers as well as with how the students have used it so far. The children can experience school from a completely new perspective here and experience in cooperation that learning is fun. Experiencing school as a space for social interaction is particularly important for first and second graders and for those switching from 4th to 5th grade. We will continue our tutoring offers in the coming school year. We will also initiate new offers for children and young people as part of education and participation. ”Even if the response has been great, there are still a few free places.
