Six mediators commissioned by the City of Grenoble have been walking the streets of the capital of the Alps since June 15 and until September 15. Their goal: to make residents aware of the different urban incivilities with a different approach.
Their neon green t-shirt flocked with the mention “mediator” in large letters on the back does not go unnoticed. Since June 15 and until September 15, they are six to survey the parks, gardens and the busiest streets of Grenoble. Their mission: to manage incivility and raise issues with elected officials.
They are the mediators of Grenoble. Mohammed and Mehdi are part of this experiment and are commissioned by the City. This Friday, they start a long day: “We are there from 6 p.m. to midnight, sometimes until two in the morning”Mohammad explains.
“The people of the City are not aware of everything. Reporting a situation to them makes it possible to find answers to certain problems”he adds about his action.
To meet the inhabitants, without appearing as an authority to raise awareness, the two mediators have their little technique: “We are interested in the individual: why is he there? Why is he in this park? Why is he doing what he is doing? to the problem.” A way to engage in dialogue without judgment or aggressiveness to better manage incivility.
The evening begins. An ever-growing crowd is heading to bars in downtown Grenoble. The two men leave their municipal park to orient their rounds towards the terraces. Here, it is the thefts that are at the heart of their awareness. Mohammed challenges two friends who lack vigilance: “You’re talking, you’re quiet, but you’re not paying attention to your bag. This is how it is here and it’s not the first time this kind of theft can happen. “he says.
The experiment ends by the end of the summer. But it could be renewed in the future: “Grenoble’s objective and ambition is to deploy, in the years to come, a system that would take place throughout the year. We can see that our parks and gardens are used as soon as the beautiful weather arrives. days of the year”indicates Maud Tavel, assistant to the public tranquility of Grenoble.
Mediators have already played a role. Thanks to their lifts, public lighting was turned on in part of the Mistral park, located in the city center of Grenoble, once prone to attacks.
