With the “Graz City Bees” project, the city’s green space and water department in collaboration with the NaturerlebnisPark is providing an impetus to raise the population’s awareness of bees, their function in the natural environment and their habitat requirements. The next beehives are now being set up in the Vincke quarry.
GRAZ. Establishing beehives in urban areas not only protects bees, but also raises public awareness of the importance of these important pollinators to our food supply and ecosystems. For this reason, properties that are owned or rented by the city of Graz were assessed and selected taking into account the possibilities and legal regulations.
Bees for the west of Graz
In addition to the already established locations at the Riel Nature Adventure Park and on the southern belt, another project is now being implemented at the Vincke quarry area. The Graz-Stadt beekeeping association was granted a precarious allowance for up to 10 beehives by the city’s real estate department. City councilor Manfred Eber, responsible for the city’s properties, states: “Providing space for beehives in our city is an important step to promote biodiversity and improve environmental quality.”
“Healthy and productive life”
Vice Mayor Judith Schwentner, who is pursuing the “Grazer City Bees” project with her department for green space and water, adds: “The Vincke Quarry area, with its variety of species and structures, offers optimal living conditions for bees. They are crucial for almost all of our ecosystems, Which is why it is all the more important for Graz to provide them with the best conditions for a healthy and productive life.”
