The battle of Clé-de-Rive will be played in the ballot boxes, not in justice. The PLR City of Geneva has decided to withdraw its appeal against the referendum of the left on the Clé-de-Rive parking project.
“Due to the current situation, we probably would not have had a court decision for many months. We did not want to postpone democratic debate to Greek calendars. We will therefore concentrate our forces on voting, ”declares Vincent Latapie, president of the section.
“Vigilant” on the brochure
The right-wing majority of the City Council voted in November 2019 in favor of the project. It plans to build a new car park with 498 spaces for cars and 388 spaces for motorcycles in Rive, in exchange for the pedestrianization of 33,000 square meters on the surface. The left, supported by soft mobility associations, launched a referendum in the process. Some 6,400 signatures have been collected.
“We will be extremely vigilant on the explanatory brochure,” warns Vincent Latapie. In its appeal, the PLR considered in particular that the explanatory memorandum to the referendum was misleading because suggesting that “one street would be pedestrianized, while there are several”.
Voting this fall?
For its part, the left and associations welcome this withdrawal. “Would the PLR have improved during confinement? Would he have acquired wisdom, common sense and ecological awareness? Perhaps it is simply a sign that the city section of the PLR is becoming reasonable and is considering a policy that is a bit more constructive and more attentive to the needs of the population, ”they react in a press release issued Thursday morning.
The popular vote could take place this fall.
