City of Bern supports Swiss Skills

The city of Bern is supporting this year’s Swiss professional championships with a maximum of CHF 444,000.

The city of Bern is supporting the Swiss Skills 2022 professional championships with a maximum of CHF 444,000. The city council approved a loan proposal on Thursday by a vote of 49 to 16.

The Swiss Skills took place in 2014 and 2018 on the Bernexpo site. In 2020 they should have taken place in Bern again, but were postponed to September 7th to 11th, 2022 due to Corona. The canton of Bern has already approved a contribution of CHF 1.5 million.

The municipal contribution consists of four sub-contributions:

  • CHF 70,000 for the use of civil protection facilities,

  • 228,000 francs for various activities such as the opening and closing ceremonies,

  • 46,000 francs for visitor information,

  • a maximum of CHF 100,000 through fee waivers.

Only the GB/JA parliamentary group spoke out against the loan, which doubted the long-term benefits of Swiss Skills. Professionals would be better served if they were given more appreciation in everyday life than if they were briefly spotlighted, said Lea Bill (UK).

According to the municipal council, the Swiss Skills have developed into a major event in Swiss vocational training. Around 900 competitors are to compete in over 75 professions next September. At the last event in Bern, around 125,000 guests attended the competitions. (sda/nde)
