The number of minors experiencing food insecurity in the city remains at record levels, according to a new report from the nonprofit organization City Harvest.
This is the highest annual figure recorded so far and represents an increase of 96% compared to 2019. Last year, this entity provided food to more than 7 million children.
The executive director of the organization Hunger Free America, Joel Berg, assures that the relaxation of the mandates of vaccination and use of masks hurt vulnerable people who depend on SNAP benefits or food stamps and pantries.
According to Berg, when society has to face a virus like COVID-19, low-income people are the ones who die.
And he called for the virus to be taken seriously, to implement policies to recover jobs and more robust child nutrition programs.
City Harvest and its partners confirm that they have served some 525,000 children a month since the start of this year. This is a 55% increase over pre-pandemic levels.
