Before the arrival of the rainy season, the City Council headed by Renán Barrera Concha supervised the actions of the prevention and maintenance program of the rain collection and drainage systems in the Municipality, to avoid the slightest impact on the families of Mérida and their police stations, he says.
During the tour that he carried out in the Francisco de Montejo subdivision, the mayor supervised the work of desilting the wells and the construction of cisterns in the area, in addition to reviewing with the director of Municipal Public Services, José Collado Soberanis, the tasks that are carried out throughout the city and its police stations.
“The removal of silt from wells and the construction of cisterns is a priority work for the city in the rainy season, therefore, the City Council works to improve the operation of the pluvial system so that, in the event of any affectations, they are minimal for the population” he expressed.
To considerably reduce the number of flooding points in the city, he reported that the Municipality has 40 cisterns, of which 20 were built in the previous administration and the other 20 in the current one.
“This system facilitates the absorption of water, which considerably reduces the time affected by the accumulation of water in the streets, thus improving the well-being and health of Meridians,” he said.
Barrera Concha explained that the proper functioning of the cisterns decreases the drainage time of rainwater, since it normally disappears in 24 or 36 hours, while with this system it is reduced to four or five hours, depending on the intensity of the rain. .
He also informed that the Municipal Public Services Directorate will soon acquire a new desilting machine, in order to provide the staff with more tools necessary for their work performance.
“The acquisition of modern equipment is possible thanks to the adequate and transparent application of public resources, which encourages Mérida to grow in attention to services and infrastructure,” he said.
Also accompanied by the director of Public Works, David Loría Madgud, he supervised the selective pruning of trees, the maintenance of public lighting, the removal of silt from ditches and gratings, and the construction of a cistern.
In this regard, Collado Soberanis explained that this type of preventive work is carried out comprehensively throughout the year and not only in the rainy season.
As an example, he highlighted that daily work is being done to remove silt from the wells and grates in the historic center and in the market area to avoid flooding that hinders the mobility of pedestrians and vehicles.
As for the work carried out on 46th Street between 47th and 47th, which included maintenance of La Rampa park, he specified that the cistern being built at that point in the city will have four deep wells and two collection ditches inside. The total amount of the investment amounts to 346 thousand 955 pesos.
He added that in order for the preventive maintenance in grids, wells and cisterns to have the expected result, it is necessary for citizens to collaborate by keeping the sewers free of garbage.
Finally, he reported that so far in the current administration, 70 trenches with gratings and 62 deep wells have been built; cleared 261 collecting wells and 310 deep wells; 11,472 trenches were cleaned with screens and 1,064 trenches and wells were repaired. In addition, the pluvial system of 27 main avenues of the city has been cleared as part of the preventive actions for this rainy season.
