City council: speed up the introduction of compulsory self-residency when buying a house

Since this week, a self-residential obligation has already been in effect for new-build homes, but this should also apply as soon as possible to existing homes that go on sale. To this end, a majority of the city council calls on the city council in an adopted proposal.

Anyone who buys a house in Amsterdam in the future should really start living in it. Coalition parties GroenLinks, D66, PvdA and SP want the city council to exclude investors in the housing market as soon as possible, after an amendment was passed by the Senate this week that legally allows this.

“Homes in Amsterdam are very scarce and expensive. The market is partly driven by investors who then rent out the homes. This puts even more pressure on the already overcooked housing market. We would like to see the council as soon as possible and in any case before July 2022 introduces a residence requirement,” said D66 councilor Ilana Rooderkerk.

Self-residential obligation

In 2017, the city council already adopted a proposal to introduce compulsory residence in as many Amsterdam homes as possible. The intention was that this would apply to both existing housing and new construction, but this turned out to be legally unenforceable. This week, the Senate passed an amendment for purchase protection, which makes it possible to introduce a self-residential obligation when selling houses.
