City Center Cyclists Struggle with Construction-Related Route Closures and Detours

Due to construction work, few familiar cycle routes remain for cyclists in the centre. Detours, dismounts and near collisions are the result.

For example, the Damrak has been closed in a southerly direction since mid-February, while part of the Prins Hendrikkade nearby was closed earlier that month. In addition, the Cuyperspassage, the tunnel under Central Station, is closed. A little further away, part of the Geldersekade has been closed for many months.

“I hardly go to my house or to work, which is a bit of a shame”

Inner city dweller

One cyclist calls it ‘harrowing’. “From A to B you have to go via Tokyo. It’s a surprise every time. And every time you’re late for your appointment.” Residents of the center area are disappointed. “I live in the middle of the city center of Amsterdam. And I hardly go to my house or to work. That’s a bit of a shame.”

Cycling is not easy. It is unclear where cyclists can cross safely on the Martelaarsgracht. You cannot go to the Nieuwendijk, because it is forbidden for cyclists. Anyone who cycles around will still encounter pedestrians, fences and a traffic controller on the Singel.

Cyclists also have to make a strange turn behind Central Station and are forced to cycle against other traffic on the Geldersekade.

Closures due to work.

Traffic councilor Melanie van der Horst says that the work will take place at the same time, because otherwise it will take even longer and cost extra money. “I am also a cyclist myself and I recently had some difficulty finding the route. I understand that it is very annoying. But I just ask for your understanding and patience.”

The duration of the work varies; work will continue on the Geldersekade until the end of this year, on the Damrak section until January 2025 and on the Prins Hendrikkade until the summer of next year. The Cuyperspassage will open to bicycle traffic at the end of March.
