Citrus growers abandon fertilization practice due to lack of resources

Citrus producers in this municipality, in the northern part of Veracruz, declared themselves insolvent to fertilize their orchards, as the price of the most frequently used fertilizer, Urea, skyrocketed considerably.

At each closing of the Late-type orange cutting cycle, and taking advantage of the humidity left by the rains, until recently the producers fertilized their orchards in these times, but in the last ten years the practice has been abandoned due to the increase in price of the product, said Epifanio Flores, a producer living in the La Cruz neighborhood.

He explained that Urea is the most widely used fertilizer due to its high concentration and ease of application.

A year ago, just in the month of May, the ton had an average cost of 4,800 pesos, but currently it is priced at 6,500, that is, it has risen 1,700 pesos, he added.

He indicated that until a few years ago there was a support program called Profertil, through which the federal government provided loans for the purchase of fertilizers, but to date it is not still offered.

In this regard, the also producer, Luis Enrique Urrutia Serrano added that, although this year the Tardía orange, which is the one with the highest production, had a good price, not everything is profit, since the money “goes to maintenance work and the sustenance of the family ”, reason why there is no recourse to buy fertilizer.
