President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that Citlalli Hernández will be the head of the women’s secretariat that will be created during her administration.
Hernández is currently a senator and serves as general secretary of Morena, and will head the new secretariat that will replace the current National Institute for Women and whose main job will be to establish the care system for women working in maquiladoras on the northern border.
I am committed to not leaving any woman helpless in the face of inequality, injustice and violence, and for this reason I will support the public care system, as our president has already announced. We will begin with agricultural day laborers and women in the maquila in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.”
Hernández said that all communities in the country will be visited to give women a rights booklet that will allow them to know what they have access to and the ways to guarantee a life free of violence.
Sheinbaum stressed that her administration will resume coordinated work with social organizations dedicated to caring for women victims of violence, which was neglected by the current administration.
Of course we are going to work with women’s organizations, civil organizations. Citlalli will be in charge, as long as we are talking about women’s rights and not about economic resources that are dispersed, because that’s how it was before. Of course we are going to work and the shelters will be maintained.”
She reiterated that her administration will implement a program that allows women to remain in their homes when they are victims of violence and not have to flee from their aggressors.
