A popular collection has raised 3.6 million euros in just eight days in Slovakia to buy ammunition for Ukrainein response to the decision of the left-wing populist and nationalist government to stop supporting Kiev in its defense against the Russian invasion.

“Ammunition for Ukraine: If the Government doesn’t do it, we do” is the name of the campaign in which 57,000 people have already donated, in reaction to the Government’s refusal to participate in a Czech initiative so that the countries of the European Union make joint purchases of military equipment for Ukraine.

“The government’s position does not represent the position of the majority of Slovaks”states the Slovak petition on its website.

This fundraising campaign is being the most successful in the history of this former communist dictatorship.

The campaign has been supported by the outgoing president, Zuzana Caputovawhile the new head of state, the social democrat Peter Pellegriniwho will take office in June, won the elections on the 6th urging the start of a peace process, even if that means Ukraine renounce the territory taken by Moscow.

Since coming to power last October, the left-wing populist Executive Robert Fico stopped sending weapons from its arsenals, after previous governments agreed to give up the fleet of supersonic fighters Mig-29 and its anti-aircraft defense system S-300of Soviet design.

The Czech initiative has managed to involve 20 countries, including Canada y Netherlands, and will shortly send the first 500,000 projectiles to the invaded country, while it has been proposed to send another million over the course of a year. EFE (I)
