Citizens can demand to pay with cash in the buses | Radio Club Tenerife

With the onset of the pandemic due to COVID19, public transport companies in Spain suppressed, as a preventive measure, payment in cash, however, at present “This measure is only maintained in the Canary Islands”, as stated in Radio Club Tenerife the titular judge of Arona, Daniel Pedro Álamo.

It so happens that a recent ruling from the Superior Court of Justice of the European Union establishes that “It is compulsory for all Member States to accept payment in cash especially, as regards basic services such as mobility”, an opinion that coincides with that of the Tenerife judge.

Virus transmission

“Has no sense”, affirms the medical deputy director of the Tenerife Health Area, Ana Darias, because there is no study that demonstrates a transmission associated with the handling of coins or bills. In addition, Emma Carmelo, parasitologist and researcher at the Institute of Tropical Diseases, states: “The risk of acquiring the virus through contact with coins or bills is very low.”

What can users do?

Although, in theory, the users of the buses in the Canary Islands can demand the payment of the ticket with cash, The transport companies in the Islands -the case of Titsa in Tenerife or Global in Gran Canaria- prevent this option from being carried out and oblige users to buy tickets and transport vouchers with a card. No trip can be made with cash, in fact, there have been cases of users who have been forced to get off the bus for carrying only cash.
