The developers from the Colossal Order studio set out to bring players the rightful successor to the great building city simulation. With 2015’s Cities: Skylines, they managed to crush the competition and win over disappointed fans of Electronic Arts’ SimCity. Cities: Skylines 2 it has to set the bar even higher and bring huge maps among other things.
From the new developer diary we learn that the maximum map size will be 159 square kilometers. The authors rightly point out that it is almost the area of Liechtenstein, which covers 160 km². Just for fun, the Vatican is 0.49 km².
You’ll have access to nine tiles at the start of each map, but the entire map will consist of 441 tiles, allowing you to easily build small isolated cities and decide to connect them later. In the original Cities: Skylines, there were 33 tiles with a total size of 92.16 km², but a city could only be built on an area of 33.18 km². Although fan modifications have brought maps as large as 299 km².
“One map tile in Cities: Skylines 2 is much smaller – about 1/3 of what it was in its predecessor, but you can unlock almost all the tiles, giving you a whopping 441 map tiles in total. The result is a playable area of 159 km², which is approx five times more than in Cities: Skylines,“ stated by the creators. In addition, there was an increase map height limitso the possibility of building a town high in the mountains can be assumed.
There will be a choice 10 map (the other two – San Francisco and Tampere – are part of the Expansion Pass) and include mountainous areas, archipelagos or rivers. As for the architecture, there will be two styles to choose from: European and American. It can be assumed that later there will be an expansion in the form of paid DLC. The chosen style will affect the design of buildings, road signs, vehicle models and other differences on the roads. Styles can be combined, but one of them will always prevail.
Cities: Skylines 2 will be released on 10/24 of this year for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game will be available on Game Pass for Xbox and PC on the same day.
