Air quality in this report is assessed by calculating the average level of fine particulate matter PM2.5 in the air over the last two calendar years (2019 and 2020). Good air quality corresponds to 0-10 micrograms per cubic meter, moderate quality to 10-15 micrograms per cubic meter, poor quality to 15-25 micrograms per cubic meter, and very poor quality to 25-35 micrograms per cubic meter.
Umeå has an air quality index of 3.7 and Tampere – 3.8. In third place is the Portuguese city of Funchal (air quality score 4.2), followed by the Estonian capital Tallinn (4.4) and the Norwegian city of Bergen (4.6).
The three most polluted cities in this report are Novison in Poland (27.3), Cremona in Italy (25.9) and Slavonski Broda in Croatia (25.7).
A total of 323 cities are included in the report. 127 cities have good air quality, 123 have moderate air pollution and 73 have poor or very poor air quality.
Most cities with poor air quality are located in Poland and northern Italy.
The three Estonian cities included in the report have good air quality: Tallinn – 4th place (4.4), Narva – 7th place (4.78), Tartu – 10th place (5.18).
The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, is in 174th place (11.1), while the capital of Latvia, Riga, is in 196th place (12.13). They found air quality to be moderate.
