During the Grenelle des mobilités initiated in 2019 and concluded in 2020, the experts worked on the prospects for travel in the region. The Lorraine path, between Nancy and Luxembourg, has been the subject of enlightening observations. Thus, on the A31 north of Metz, daily peaks regularly amount to 108,000 vehicles. North of Nancy, the traffic shows recurring peaks at 86,500 vehicles per day. In this sector, the A33 and the A330 also posted peaks of over 60,000 vehicles per day.
According to the Dreal (regional directorate for the environment, development and housing), in 2030 the maximum increase in traffic on the A31 in exchange with Luxembourg would be 44%. In 2050, the increase should reach 75%!
Lorraine Agape town planning agencies, Aguram and Scalen have drawn the lines for the decades to come: “By 2030, and with constant infrastructure, capacity reserves on the A31 will be zero or exceeded on many sections. The foreseeable changes in traffic over this horizon, and even more so over the 2050 horizon, point to a sharp deterioration in traffic conditions. The slightest event will cause disturbances on the entire axis. “However, the current infrastructure development projects (A31bis, TER) will not allow capacity to evolve for ten years, note the experts. Tracks are being studied for rail, air, and speed regulation on the road to smooth traffic. Knowing that the Nancy-Luxembourg rail axis is one of the busiest axes in France.
