“Ciney Wastewater Treatment Plant to Double Capacity with Major Extension and Restoration Project”

In service since 1998, the Ciney wastewater treatment plant will undergo major extension and restoration work. A second wastewater treatment line will be added to the existing line, which will be renovated. The treatment capacity will increase from 16,000 to 28,000 population equivalents.

A three-year project

This extension and restoration work on the Ciney wastewater treatment plant will begin next May or even June, for a total period of three years.
A new building will be erected in place of the current building. A new reception center for station sludge and sludge from septic tanks will be added to the entrance to the site. For the processing of these materials, the Ciney station is also a nerve center in the Province of Namur.

The current station has reached its limits

This future project comes after more than 25 years of service of the station. A station that has somehow reached its age limit. Its treatment capacity is also becoming limited compared to the wastewater discharged by the town of Ciney. Éric Lefèvre is director of the water distribution and sanitation design office at Inasep:

This station is reaching the end of its life for its electromechanical components, its motors and its pumps. All of this will be replaced. And this station becomes a little too small compared to the development of the city of Ciney and its surroundings. So we need to enlarge it.

In three years, the new wastewater treatment plant will also have the task of treating wastewater from the village of Emptinne, as well as that of Achêne and its zoning. It will also make it possible to meet the water purification needs of the future Cinaciennes ZACs, ie concerted development zones, not to mention the extension of the Biron zone.
