Cineplexx plant High-End-Multiplex-Kino im Skopje East Gate Mall

The cinema group Cineplexx will open the second multiplex cinema in Macedonia in the brand new Skopje East Gate shopping center in Skopje. The cinema is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2021.


The new high-end multiplex cinema in Skopje East Gate Mall will cover 3,000 square meters. It will have eight cinema halls, state-of-the-art cinema technology including laser projectors and Dolby Atmos surround sound system, as well as 1,000 seats. Construction of the 5 million euro cinema started on July 15, 2021.

The Cineplexx cinema group also operates Cineplexx in the Skopje City Mall, which opened on November 22, 2012. As the only multiplex in the country, it was also the only one that opened during the last cinemas closed on April 6, 2021. Due to the nationwide night curfew in April and May 2021, Cineplexx recorded the lowest attendance figures since the beginning of 2021. In June 2021, when The curfew was lifted, however, the cinema recorded 10,711 visitors, more than doubling compared to January 2021 with 5,871 admissions.

Audience numbers have risen significantly since June for a number of reasons such as the lifting of the curfew, the easing of measures and the introduction of new films. Since June 2021, cinemas have been operating almost normally with disinfection rules, mask requirements and, in smaller capacities, with food and drinks permitted at the locations.

Several cinemas opened their gates – Cineplexx had never closed them

The Cinema Millenium in Skopje reopened its doors on June 17, 2021 after being closed for six months. This decision was made while Macedonia had the lowest infection rates in a month.

Some Macedonian cinemas reopened as early as May after having closed since April 6, 2021. The Cinematheque of Macedonia reopened its open-air cinema on May 14, 2021 while the 3D-Kino Bitola reopened on May 20, 2021. The multiplex cinema Cineplexx remained open all the time as the cinemas were allowed to reopen on September 24, 2020.

It is still mandatory to wear masks in cinemas and all venues must operate at 30% of their actual capacity.

Since June 2021, the daily nationwide curfew no longer applies. Also since June 2021 there is no longer a requirement to wear a mask outside, except for gatherings in large groups. Individuals must continue to wear a protective mask in all enclosed spaces, including taxis and public transportation.

Outdoor gatherings are allowed. Authorities have allowed celebrations and weddings with no more than 100 guests, but they are only allowed to fill 50 percent of the venue’s capacity. In addition, participants and fans are allowed to take part in sports games and outdoor events that only occupy 30 percent of total capacity.
