More than 15 billion pesos is the figure that cinemas stopped receiving through the box office, due to the pandemic. There is talk of “the worst year for film exhibitions”, according to what was said to M2 by Tábata Vilar, director of Canacine.

“There is no way to say otherwise. In 2019, 18 thousand 186 million pesos were soldWhile this year only 3,584 million pesos were sold, the loss is practically one hundred percent ”, explained Tábata Vilar Villa.

And it is that throughout 2020, only 62 million people attended a movie theater, most of them did so in the first quarter of the year, before the confinement that led to the closing of theaters and consequently in the worst of their crises.

“You are talking about that only 5 percent of tickets were sold in the pandemic period (in relation to last year), fortunately it was sold during the first three months, which helped us so that this was not a year of zero” said Vilar.

“The decrease is 80 percent,” Tábata added regarding the annual report released today, after the chamber’s meeting with members of the industry, mainly the two large exhibitors, Cinépolis and Cinemex.

Other premieres are still expected that can offset this year’s figures, such as Wonder Woman and Tell me when you; However, since the cinemas opened “the panorama is almost the same,” said Vilar, not even half of the allowed capacity is filled.

Among the highest grossing films of this year are: Sonic, Paramount’s animated film; Bad Boys, starring Will Smith; and Birds of Prey, the return of Margot Robbie to the screen. The big blockbusters are pending for 2021.
