The state is distributing 100,000 euros for this year’s cinema culture awards. 31 cinemas will receive money. Two cinemas stand out.
31 cinemas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were awarded 100,000 euros for their programs. The main prize of 10,000 euros in the commercial venues category went to Fabrik.Kino 1 in Neustrelitz, as the Ministry of Culture announced. Among the non-commercial cinemas, the Latücht in nearby Neubrandenburg received the prize for the best cinema program. It comes with prize money of 4,000 euros.
According to the ministry, there are 79 commercial and non-commercial film theaters nationwide, from the Filmpalast Capitol in Schwerin to the Zeltkino Hiddensee and the Landkino in Niepars (Vorpommern Rügen district). The 2023 annual programs were evaluated. According to the information, film theaters and film clubs that show outstanding cinema programs beyond mainstream films will be honored.
Millions invested in cinemas
For Culture Minister Bettina Martin (SPD), the cinemas are part of the cultural landscape in the northeast. “In the cinema, we experience stories together that touch us, make us think and connect us with one another,” she said. “Films reflect our society, show different perspectives on our world and encourage exchange.”
Martin had allocated three million euros in 2022/23 to modernize the country’s cinemas. A further 1.5 million euros would be available in 2024/25, she explained.
