Cinema screenings remain the exception

Saarbrücken / Mainz (dpa / lrs) – Saarland cinema operators have been able to reopen since April 6, thanks to the opening model there. But so far no curtain has been lifted. “A single location doesn’t bring us anything, you have to see the big picture,” says Cinestar managing director Oliver Fock, for example. Only if at least 80 percent of the cinemas in Germany are open would it be possible to present a wide range of new films. Only the municipal cinema “Achteinhalb” in Saarbrücken dares to make the exception. Between April 21 and 29, six performances are planned for viewers with a negative corona test.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, cinema operators are skeptical that model tests in some selected circles, such as are being discussed in the state, would lead to cinema openings. “Something like that doesn’t help at all,” says Ralf Holl, head of the cinema center in Nastätten in the Rhein-Lahn district and member of the main committee of the Main Association of German Film Theaters. The film distributors need six weeks in advance for marketing and as evaluation time if they want to bring a new film to the cinema “reasonably profitably”. “That will be very difficult in such a shaky time as today, when the third or fourth wave is imminent,” he admitted. “We can’t be angry with the distributors.”
