Tarragona will be this summer, for the first time, one of the venues for the ‘Cinema Lliure a la Platja’ exhibition, which from June 30 to August 10 will take different independent film titles to the beaches of Catalonia, Mallorca and the city of Tarragona .
Specifically, on Mondays 10, 17 and 24 July at La Móra beach will host three screenings of the independent film festival. The rest of the beaches where the program will take place will be those of Barcelona, El Prat, Sitges, Palamós and Tossa de Mar in Catalonia and the beaches of Palma and Pollença in Majorca. In all these towns, you can see the spot of the latest tourist campaign in Tarragona. This program complements the city’s summer entertainment offer in terms of cinema a la fresca (Wednesdays with Sota la Palmera Festival and Fridays with Estiu Espectacular).
Tarragona thus joins the 12th edition of the Cinema Lliure a la Platja festival with the screening of three films directed by three directors (Carla Simón, Alaúda Ruiz de Azúa and Charlotte Wells) and which have obtained international recognition: Alcarraswinner of the Golden Bear at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival; Cinco Lobitos, winner of three Goya awards, including those for best new director and best female performance for Laia Costa; and Aftersun French Touch Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Before the media, the acting mayor and Councilor for Tourism, Pau Ricomà, wanted to highlight the “familiar, Mediterranean and quality character” of the proposal, “in perfect harmony with the values that we fly for Tarragona as a city and as a destination” . “We joined, organizing the projections from the Tarragona Municipal Tourist Board, a successful proposal and we value the beach of La Móra, which is a true Mediterranean paradise”, Ricomà stated to assess the arrival of the sample in Tarragona.
Pau Ricomà has also explained that in 2022 Tarragona Turisme participated in Cinema Llibre carrying out an advertising action linked to the promotion of the destination and that in this 2023 edition Tarragona participates directly as one of the eight locations where “a space for coexistence to see quality, independent cinema in its original version in an outdoor urban environment”. “Free Cinema on the beach of La Móra is a complementary recreational offer for the city’s campsites and a top-level and decentralized cultural offer for the Tarragona neighborhood: we expect the presence of 1,000 spectators per session”, the mayor has advanced.
For her part, the director of Cinema Lliure a la Platja, Juliana Spadano, has assured that they had been considering “taking the festival in Tarragona, because it has magnificent beaches” for a long time. Spadano also explained that in this twelfth edition there will be 22 screenings in eight locations, which he describes as “a unique and very beautiful experience” and added that the show wants to “give visibility to new talent and female directors.”
The films will be screened when the sun sets, at 9:00 p.m., to ensure good visibility of the screen. Before each feature film, a short film will be screened, for which this year the festival has the collaboration of the FILMETS and Conofest festivals, as well as the participation of schools from Catalonia and Mallorca in the Nou Talent Convocation.
