Continuing the cycle “Latvian Films for the Centenary of Latvia” started in the centenary of Latvia, a new seven-creation cycle “Latvian Films for Latvia Today” has been created on Latvian Television.
It consists of film critic Daira Āboliņa and director Agita Cāne. They help viewers see what’s going on behind the scenes, from the filmmakers’ ideas and script to what’s happening on the set and in the editing.
On the evening of November 24, a story will be shown about how the documentary film master Vitaly Manski’s film “Gorbachev. Paradīze ”, which has not yet experienced its Latvian premiere.
“The fame of this film is already ahead,” says Daira Āboliņa. “It’s a documentary about this well-known Soviet-era statesman who is now a respectable age, 89 years old, whose life is not easy both physically – the burden of all ages – and it is not simple in the sense that everyone at this age, most likely, there is a desire and also a need to clarify his relationship with what he has done, with his decisions, which in the case of Mikhail Gorbachev affected the whole world. “
The documentary story about the last leader of the Soviet Union will also provide an opportunity to look at his daily life and birthday celebrations this year. An important part of the film is the production of director Alvis Hermans “Gorbachev” at the Moscow Theater of Nations.
“Vitalijs Manskis is a world-class documentary filmmaker who has lived in Latvia for more than five years. This film will also be under the name of Latvia, the Latvian flag. This is a film co-financed by the Latvian National Film Center, ”emphasizes Āboliņa.
A film critic says about the production process: “It’s always very moving when you can approach a process that is already very documentary in itself.
You are a documentary filmmaker watching another documentary filmmaker. We appreciate the way he works, we listen to what he asks Gorbachev.
Many thanks to Manski for entrusting us with many curtain materials. As a documentary filmmaker, it is sometimes very important for him to use the camera as his notebook. ”
On the portal Replay.lv it is possible to watch the first show of the new cycle – a film trip back in history together with the director Dāvis Sīmanis, who has finished working on the historical, dramatic, comical, surreal thriller “Year before the War”.
A show about the upcoming film “My Marriage Project” by American animated film director Signe Baumane is being made.
“This film has been made for five years, and it is made in America and Latvia in parallel. Signe works in her studio in New York, Brooklyn, her group of animators works here in Latvia, ”says Daira Āboliņa.
