It has already been considered several times whether “Game of Thrones” or Westeros could also be successful in the cinema. Now it seems that HBO is actually taking action on this matter.

George RR Martin has created one of the most successful entertainment brands in the world with his fantasy continent of Westeros. As far as film adaptations of his books are concerned, eight seasons of “Game of Thrones” and two seasons of “House of the Dragon“ came about. 2025 is coming “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“, an adaptation of the Hedge Knight novellas. All of these are series from the premium cable channel HBObut in the future the cinema could also be used.

Is “Game of Thrones” coming to the cinema?

Bringing “Game of Thrones” to the cinema is of course not a new idea. Especially since some of the highlight episodes were even shown in selected cinemas at the time. Also had David Benioff and DB Weiss, who Showrunner of the series, toyed with the idea of producing three films instead of an eighth season. Looking back, this approach might have been better from the perspective of many disappointed fans.

That HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery could now change the content strategy when it comes to Westeros, reports The Hollywood Reporter. There is a “early development“ the speech in which there should be a corresponding film. Neither authors nor directors have been involved yet – let alone a cast. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

So it’s completely unclear what a potential film set in Westeros could be about. Since then, the spin-off project surrounding the character Jon Snow has faileda continuation of the story after “Game of Thrones” would be particularly interesting. The originally planned sequel was supposed to follow Jon’s life back at the Wall. Kit Harington was again intended for the title role.

Why HBO is changing course now

The fact that the series finale of “Game of Thrones” was not made in the form of a feature film was due to the veto of the broadcaster HBO. But a lot of things have changed there since Discovery took over. There are currently a few examples of cross-media franchises: From the DC strip “The Batman“The villain series was created”The Penguin“. And the two “Dune” films will be shown from November 17th through the format “Dune: Prophecy“expanded.

Whether this strategy also works for “Game of Thrones” will now be tested in a first film. Westeros creator GRRM has been open to conquering the big screen with his fantasy stories for many years. It’s quite possible that he himself will end up being responsible for the script. At least he should have a say again (as he did with “House of the Dragon”).
