The Cincinnati Reds want to start 2024 on the right foot in a search that led them to right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas, who was in free agency.
And according to MLB.com, the 30-year-old pitcher reached an agreement with the Cincinnati organization for one year and $16 million, pending a physical examination.
Montas is coming off a difficult season with the New York Yankees, as he missed the regular schedule almost entirely due to a right shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery.
The native of Sainagua, Dominican Republic ultimately made just one major league appearance, pitching 1.1 innings out of the bullpen in the Bronx Bombers’ 161st game.
Montas’ last full season was in 2021 with the Oakland Athletics, going 9-for-13 with a 3.37 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 207 strikeouts in 187 innings, earning him a sixth-place finish in Cy Young Award voting.
Although the club has not made an official statement on the matter, it is expected that by the time the contract is closed, Cincinnati will have spent around $105.25 million this offseason.
