Cienfuegos Thermoelectric Plant will be out of service for more than a month – 2024-04-27 22:56:10

The energy crisis in Cuba is about to worsen, and the population is about to suffer another month of sporadic power outages and unstable power, after this Friday they announced a pause in the activities of Unit 4 of the Cienfuegos Thermoelectric Plant.

According to the official press, the plant will be out of service for “maintenance” for 35 days, which is expected to cause more blackouts than those already experienced on the Island.

The director of the “Carlos Mamuel de Céspedes” thermoelectric plant, José Osvaldo González, stated that the closure of the plant for these reasons was already planned, since there were problems with the boiler, and that its repair had even been postponed.

“Maintenance of block four was planned for the beginning of the year to resolve boiler problems, especially on the exchange surface, superheater and superheater; and this intervention due to the situation of the SEN (National Electroenergy System) was postponed to the second quarter of the year,” he noted.

According to the official, currently Unit 4 itself is not working at 100% of its capacity, since due to the same difficulties it only generates 100 MW of its 158 MW capacity.

Despite everything, the official indicated that in order not to overload the service due to the lack of its thermoelectric plants, work will begin until the works are completed. work at the Mariel and Felton plantsat the end of May.

“The intervention is scheduled for the end of May, when we will begin repairs for 35 days,” he explained.

González stated that the superheater and reheater that will replace those currently in use have already been manufactured.

Likewise, he pointed out that other equipment with the same function is being manufactured in the workshops, and the authorities hope that the new reheaters can last 20 more years.

The truth is that the Cuban regime has repaired the thermoelectric plants in parts, closing them at times and fixing at a time only one of the multiple problems they face, something that has been done since 2018 and that has not been able to put an end to the blackouts so frequent.

In recent days, Cubans have once again suffered long and exhausting power outages, all in the midst of heat waves that have been just the prelude to summer, the season that worries them most.

The Electrical Union (UNE) announced an all-day electricity cut for this Wednesday, after the service was affected the previous day due to a deficit in generation capacity from 5:21 am to 1:27 in the morning.
