CICV and Finlay Institute of Vaccines Sign Scientific Cooperation Agreement for Public Health Progress

The Center for Research in Life Sciences (CICV) of the Simón Bolívar University and the Finlay Institute of Vaccines, one of the most prestigious Cuban scientific organizations in the world, signed a scientific cooperation agreement in order to achieve progress in public health.

The rector of Unisimón, José Consuegra Bolívar, highlighted the positive impact generated by this alliance. “It is the second step of a meeting process that will allow us to carry out joint research developments in the future.”

The institutions held a second meeting to identify scientific collaboration interests and define the first projects in the field of tropical diseases.

It is important to mention that the agreement contemplates the possibility of co-supervising the thesis of the Doctorate in Genetics and Molecular Biology of Unisimón, since the Finlay Institute has a faculty of researchers and professors as a teaching unit of the University of Havana.

Paola Amar Sepúlveda, Vice Chancellor for Research, Extension and Innovation, highlighted the progress made by this institution in biological matters.

“We continue to advance in how we achieve biological autonomy and provide our territory with public health care, which is possible by cooperating with countries like Cuba, which during the pandemic showed progress with the creation of its own vaccine,” Sepúlveda asserted.

Firstly, four new lines of research were defined, taking advantage of the experience of more than 30 years of the Cuban organization in the development of vaccines, knowledge of infectious diseases and protection mechanisms by vaccination.

“We set out to identify common interests in scientific collaboration and bilateral research projects, especially in the areas of health sciences that are the strengths of our institution,” said Dagmar García Rivera, Vice Director of Research and Development at the Finlay Institute.
