The actress is considered to be a pioneer in efforts by African American women artists to gain recognition in the US film industry. Tyson often rejected roles in which she saw stereotypical images of black women reflected, such as roles of housemaids and prostitutes.

On the other hand, she played legendary African American women such as the anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman or Coretta Scott King, the wife of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martin Luther King.

She won several Emmy trophies, including starring in the television movie “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” (1974). Her appearance in the play “The Trip to Bountiful” earned her the coveted Tony trophy for best actress in 2013.

Until recently, the cinema star was in front of the camera for films and series. On Netflix, Tyson can currently be seen in a series hit: She played the mother of main character Annalize Keating (Viola Davis) in “How To Get Away With Murder”.
