Cianjur (ANTARA) – The Cianjur District Health Service, West Java, is improving treatment and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS by providing education about the impact of sexual deviation and promiscuity to schools and factories.
Head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division of the Cianjur Health Office, Dr. Frida Layla Yahya, in Cianjur, said that from 2001 to 2023, 1,922 people were infected with HIV/AIDS spread across a number of areas in Cianjur.
“The largest addition of people with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) occurred in 2022 with 219 people, while in 2023 there were 183 PLWHA who were detected,” he said.
This number, said Frida, is likely to continue to increase because it is suspected that there are still many PLWHA who are not caught and do not report their cases. Since the last three years, most HIV/AIDS transmissions have been due to same-sex relationships or male sex (MSM).
Meanwhile, of the 183 PLWHA, 137 of them were men and 46 were women. This number was obtained from the screening results of a total of 19,844 people examined by the Cianjur Health Office until September 2023.
“The key population that we have to screen to find out the number of HIV/AIDS cases is pregnant women. Of the 16,727 people we examined, 10 of them turned out to be HIV/AIDS positive. “All those detected are educated to take anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs at health facilities,” he said.
Providing ARVs is an effort to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, the patient’s body is healthier because the virus is suppressed, so they can still carry out normal activities. They are given education to leave their relationships, such as MSM, so they no longer have same-sex sex.
Meanwhile, from data up to November 2023, he added, the number of PLWHA who regularly receive ARVs is 416 people, 300 people are served at Cianjur Regional Hospital, 80 people at Cimacan Regional Hospital, 23 people at RSDH, nine people at Cidaun Community Health Center, and four people at Pagelaran Regional Hospital .
