The CIA is trying to convince Russians in a slick video to share “the truth” about Russia with US intelligence.
In the video, the Americans are addressing Russians who are frustrated with the war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin or life in Russia in general. The CIA is trying to persuade these Russians to share their secrets with the Americans.
The CIA shared the video Monday in messaging app Telegram, the main medium for Russians to obtain or share unfiltered news about the war in Ukraine.
The CIA especially hopes to get in touch with people who work in intelligence services, in politics or as scientists. Russians who have knowledge of politics or economics in Russia in other ways are also welcome. “The CIA wants to know the truth about Russia. We are looking for reliable people who can tell us this truth,” the intelligence agency said.
Patriotic Russians are also welcome
According to the CIA, cooperation does not mean that Russians have to give up love for their country. The service hopes that Russians will see cooperation as a way to help their country further. The video ends with instructions on how Russians can contact the CIA anonymously and securely.
Previously, similar recruitment campaigns via other social media have already been successful, the CIA says without citing further examples.
