CIA Seeks Russian Spies: Recruitment Opportunities Amid Ukraine War Discontent

The CIA has released a video for the second time in a short time to persuade Russian soldiers and top officials to come forward with information. The spy service is particularly looking for intelligence about the Russian leadership.

The CIA believes that the Ukraine war has caused so much discontent among Russians that they are willing to cooperate. The video shows a fictional civil servant who goes to work in the morning and looks over files. At the end of the day, after much deliberation, he enters a restaurant where he contacts the CIA on his phone on a secure Tor site.

“Maybe the people around you don’t want to hear the truth,” the video says. ‘We want that.’ The Russians are then shown how they can safely contact the spy service. ‘The CIA wants to know the truth about Russia, and we are looking for trustworthy people who know and can tell us this truth. Your information may be more valuable than you think.”

The intelligence service hopes to recruit Russians in particular who work in important parts of the government apparatus, such as the army. “Are you a soldier?” asks the CIA. ‘Do you work in the field of intelligence, diplomacy, science, high technology or do you deal with people who do this? Do you have information about the economy or high leadership of the Russian Federation? Please contact us.’

When the CIA published a similar video in May, the Kremlin warned that Western espionage activities in the country were being monitored. The fact that a new video has now been released shows that the CIA is doing everything it can to quickly recruit spies. According to CIA boss William Burns, former ambassador to Moscow, dissatisfaction among Russians about the war is increasing. “This discontent creates a unique opportunity for us,” Burns said in July. ‘We won’t let it go to waste.’
