The US intelligence service CIA is certain that China is considering supplying weapons to Russia. But the decision has not yet been made, emphasizes CIA director Bill Burns in an interview with CBS News. The US government disclosed the information in hopes of influencing the Chinese decision.
“It would be a very risky and unwise gamble,” Burns said of the possible Chinese arms shipments.
Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, also expressed his concerns last week after a meeting with his Chinese colleague Wang Yi. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell then warned that China would “cross a red line” by supplying arms to Russia.
China calls the US claims untrue. To the frustration of the US, the Asian country has tried to adopt a neutral position in the war between Ukraine and Russia over the past year.
