This was revealed by Chris Whipple in his forthcoming book “The Fight of His Life: Inside Joe Biden’s White House.”
In his book, Whipple reveals that at the time, January 2022, Zelensky dismissed suggestions that Russia would stage an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and suggested that the warnings of the American public created “panic.”
It is unusual for the US to disclose intelligence like this to the public, indicating that Washington is confident in its assessment of Russia’s intentions. But just weeks before Russia invaded, Zelensky expressed concern that such warnings would have a negative impact on Ukraine’s economy and stressed that Kiev was used to threats from Russia.

“Burns came to give him a reality check and the CIA director shared that Russian Special Forces were coming for Zelensky,” Whipple wrote. InsiderTuesday (17/1/2023).
It added that President Joe Biden told Burns to share the exact details of the Russia plot.
“This immediately came to Zelensky’s attention; he was shocked, sober by this news,” Whipple wrote in the book, which will be released on January 17.
Russia invaded Ukraine the following month, launching Europe’s largest military conflict since World War II. Since then, Ukrainian officials have spoken of Zelensky surviving more than a dozen Russian assassination attempts. But Whipple, who interviewed Burns, gives readers a glimpse into how the stakes are placed on Zelensky as he tries to refute US warnings of an impending invasion.
“The intelligence was so detailed it would have helped Zelensky’s security forces thwart two separate Russian attempts to assassinate him,” he wrote.
