Churches, organs and prisons: 6 places you might not expect at ADE

Starting today, the city will be completely upside down for a few days with ADE. The big parties at the Amsterdam Dance Event are almost sold out, but you can also let loose in other amazing places – sometimes a little more carefully.

Organ Park

Next to the Vondelpark is a place where you don’t immediately think of beats: the Orgelpark. On Sunday, October 20, young composers Frieda Gustavs and Rick Veldhuizen will introduce you to the world of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. Together with Pitou Nicolaes and Jasmine Karimova, Gustavs, together with trombones and organs, bring to life a story about what has changed today since Bruckner’s time.

In addition, Veldhuizen translates the symphony electronically with saxophones and electric guitar. “Unlike many other parties with established names, this evening is all about young makers. Classical music is being given a modern twist and that is very special,” said Anne van der Weijden, Arts and Culture Program Coordinator at ADE.

Bijlmer Prison

Dancing is a form of freedom, which is why you might not immediately think of prison. But the old Bijlmer Prison has had a second life as part of the ‘Lifelong’ club.

You can dance between the industrial walls of the old boiler room on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the ADE weekend during Cooking with Palms Trax, Ki / Ki all day, Intercell x Chlär Invites and Strangelove. A unique place, explains Festival Manager Aylano Scipio. “I think it’s great that something that used to be a symbol for something negative is giving so many people a positive experience during ADE. ”

Zuiderkerk

From the prison we continued to the church. The Zuiderkerk is in the center of the city. This first Protestant church in town gives a stage to the music of Philip Glass during ADE.

Philip Glass is one of the smallest founders of music. Lavinia Meijer, who reports on her music with the harp, will play one of the opening concerts on Wednesday 16 October, together with the multidisciplinary artist Nikki Hock. It will all be interesting, experimental and exciting, but unfortunately the tickets are sold out for a while.

The train

If you have seen everything in the city, or if you have lost your way, you can also enjoy the music of different DJs on a four-hour train on Friday and Saturday.

The so-called Club Train from the organizer 50: Hertz departs from CS and stops at several places in the country, so that visitors outside Amsterdam can also enjoy ADE. While the train moves through the country, you can party around the DJ booth or relax in the refrigerated carriages.

The Van Gogh Museum

Although peace and quiet are usually closely observed, that is not the intention tonight. Because music is also a form of art and that is why it is not surprising that the opening of ADE is in the Van Gogh Museum.

Eefje de Visser gives an unplugged show there: without a band or sponsorship, but with an acoustic guitar, a piano and the occasional speaker.

And according to program coordinator Van der Weijden, that is unique to ADE. “Eefje is mostly known for electronic pop music; she herself chose to be in the Van Gogh Museum without plugging to play That fits well with the intimate setting of the museum. In addition, there will be an LED screen with specially created images that will enhance performance. This is the first time that an ADE party has been held in the Van Gogh Museum.”

Royal Tropical Institute

The Royal Tropical Institute is also opening its doors to ADE for the first time this year. Various international artists such as Jaden Thompson, Vitess and Lola Palmer will perform on Sunday in the large marble hall of the 19th century building.

“The building has beautiful architecture and has always had a cultural context. It’s a place that many Amsterdammers know, but where they never take the time to see the inside,” says Festival Manager Scipio.
