Church visitors in Urk and Krimpen a / d IJssel attack journalists, an arrest

Despite the urgent call from the municipality of Krimpen aan den IJssel to keep church services digital because of corona, some 600 to 700 people still came to the Mieras Church. People do not wear mouth masks, but they say they keep a distance of 1.5 meters during the service.

“The churchgoers believe that God protects them,” says reporter Jeroen de Jager. “Since October this church has been receiving about 200-300 believers per service and in those months there have been hardly any infections, they say.”

The Mieras Church can accommodate 1500 visitors. Yesterday, mayor Martijn Vroom sent a letter to religious communities, after the Mieras Church, following the example of the Sion Church in Urk, had announced that it would open the church building to all members today. The letter also pointed out that the number of infections in the municipality is increasing enormously.

In Urk, where the Sion Church was fully reopened to the faithful today, the situation is also grim. Several journalists have been filmed, photographed and verbally threatened: “We’ll get you soon.”
