Church – Freiburg im Breisgau – Bishops call for mercy and understanding – Panorama

Stuttgart / Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – Regional Bishop Frank Otfried July called in his Christmas sermon in view of the corona pandemic not to exclude anyone. God accept all people. “At Christmas God starts anew with us, the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, the questioners and seekers, the skeptics and doubters, those who say my everyday life and my life problems have nothing to do with Christmas. I mean exactly the opposite is Fall, “said July in the Stuttgart collegiate church on Saturday. The Christmas gifts of God are consolation, relationship, orientation, reconciliation and mercy.

The Archbishop of Freiburg, Stephan Burger, encouraged people to show mercy on Saturday. “And should we not be able to actively help ourselves, we can always support others in it,” said Burger in the Freiburg Minster.

July also referred to the corona pandemic in his Christmas message. Christmas gives orientation, creates relationships and gives hope in a public in which “shouting, threats of violence, hatred and exclusion” dominated the picture. The relationship that Christmas Eve creates between people has consequences for the weighing up of self-interest and the common good. “This is especially true in times of the pandemic. Let us weigh up very carefully what we do or not do. And we always also see the needs of others.”
