Church – Freiburg im Breisgau – Archdiocese of Freiburg celebrates its 200th anniversary – Panorama

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The Catholic Archdiocese of Freiburg is commemorating the 200th anniversary of its founding on August 16. A memorial ceremony and a book presentation with Archbishop Stephan Burger are planned, as the Archbishop’s Ordinariate announced on Monday.

Pope Pius VII had formally established the archdiocese on August 16, 1821 with the bull “Provida solersque”. According to the information, it was composed of large parts of the dissolved diocese of Constance and areas of the dioceses of Strasbourg, Speyer, Worms, Mainz and Würzburg. The Freiburg Minster was declared a bishop’s church. According to the homepage, the actual foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg took place after very lengthy negotiations in 1827 with the appointment of the first archbishop, the minster pastor Bernhard Boll, by the papal bull “Ad dominici gregis custodiam”.

The archdiocese had around 1.76 million members at the end of last year. That was a decrease of 35,827 compared to the previous year.
