Mama’s Chukker is a charity initiative organized by women in which sports and crowdfunding join hands to raise funds for breast cancer research.
This cancer is the most frequent tumor in women in Spain, only in 2023 48,000 new cases of breast and gynecological cancer are expected, and 6,600 patients die each year.
The first of the initiatives will consist of a polo match between three women’s teams that seeks to raise funds through iHelp, a charity fundraising modality that for the first time brings together polo and a collective financing network to help research projects advance.
The women’s polo competition will take place on June 10 at the Club de Campo de Madrid, and the funds raised will go entirely to finance three breast cancer research projects led by leading hospitals and oncologists. For the first time, the women’s Handicap agreed upon by the Handicap Committee of the Royal Spanish Polo Federation will compete.
The research projects are directed by Dr. Eva Ciruelos from the Hospital 12 de Octubre; Dr. Aleix Prat from the Hospital Clínic Barcelona; Dr. Manuel Ruiz. From the Virgen Roció Hospital, Dr. Ana Lluch from the Valencia Clinical Hospital and Dr. Miguel Martin from the Gregorio Marañón Hospital.
This project is part of Mujer Deporte Cáncer (MDC), a breast and gynecological cancer prevention program that is carried out in coordination with entities in the health, sports, social and labor fields. This program has been developed by AMOH (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Association) and has had the help of SEOM (Spanish Society of Medical Oncology), GEICAM (Spanish Breast Cancer Research Group), SOLTI (Oncology Research Group), the CSD (Superior Sports Council) through its ‘Universo Mujer II’ program, and more than 40 sports federations, including the RFEP (Royal Spanish Polo Federation).
More globally, Mama’s Chukker seeks to highlight the importance of playing sports, social life and the benefits of music for health at all levels, also facilitating recovery after treatment.
