The Government of Chubut, led by Ignacio “Nacho” Torres, through the Ministry of Health, recalled that the free vaccination campaign against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is still being carried out in all vaccination centers in the great -section, which is aimed at pregnant women. women who are between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation, that is, in the eighth month of pregnancy.

The initiative, which was originally planned to end on July 31, was extended to August 31 by a decision of the National Directorate for the Control of Chronic Diseases, Ministry of Home Health, based on the impetus to they have and evolving respiratory diseases of the current RSV season, which has delayed the onset of circulation.

In addition, this measure seeks to continue efforts to increase coverage, taking into account the narrow vaccination window against RSV.

More than 1,700 pregnant women received the vaccine

This vaccination campaign started on March 1 and, so far, 1,735 pregnant women in the province who were in that period of pregnancy have already received the RSV vaccine, which protects babies from birth to 6 months of life , from such diseases as bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

In this regard, the regional director of Prevalent Pathologies and Epidemiology, Mariela Brito, explained, “The respiratory syncytial virus is the main cause of bronchiolitis in babies, especially in young children, and it has a great impact on the health system in the season the winter, when there is saturation of pediatric and neonatology beds due to infections with this virus. “

In this sense, he said that “the vaccine against this virus has shown high efficiency in reducing serious hospitalizations for this reason and also in reducing infections in children outpatient,” Brito said.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of bronchiolitis, pneumonia and other lower respiratory infections (LRTI) in infants under one year of age.

The vaccine is indicated for all pregnant women in the eighth month of pregnancy (between weeks 32 and 36). In this way, babies are protected from birth until they are 6 months old.

In addition, this vaccine can be given together with any of the other vaccines indicated during pregnancy, such as the Acellular Triple Bacterial vaccine, the flu vaccine and the Covid vaccine -19.

Vaccination is free, does not require a medical certificate, and will be carried out until August 31, in the 140 vaccination centers in the province.
