Chuba Akpom looks in an interview with Football International back to the first half of the season. The striker, who came over from Middlesbrough, admits that he was surprised by what he found in Amsterdam.

“Everyone knows Ajax, of course. You compete at the highest level, you rarely lose in the competition. But it didn’t go that way. So I thought at the beginning: what have I ended up in?” This season, the team from Amsterdam experienced the worst start to the season in club history. “That was a big shock for me. But that’s what happened, it’s up to us to turn it around.”
The English striker then puts his finger on the sore spot: the lack of experience in Ajax’s selection. “You can see that in the little things: we are winning, how do we manage that lead? How do you get a win?” According to Akpom, it all comes down to experience. “The knowhow know how to resolve such situations.”

According to Akpom, blaming the quality of the ‘new boys’ is too simplistic. “They were brought in for a reason. But if you put twelve new players and a trainer who is not used to working with so many foreign players in a team, it becomes difficult for everyone. Of course we still have to do much better, but that is not easy,” concludes Akpom.
