Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – European Football Championship, Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo – just two highlights of an eventful sporting year in 2021. And an unpleasant companion in the second year: the coronavirus pandemic.
Here is the first part of the sporty annual review 2021:
03.01. Former rugby professional Gerwyn Price becomes darts world champion for the first time.
04.01. Bo Svensson is the new coach at Mainz 05 and should protect the club from relegation.
06.01. The Pole Kamil Stoch wins the Four Hills Tournament of ski jumpers for the third time.
09.01. Schalke 04 wins again after 30 games without a win across the seasons – and thus escapes a negative record.
13.01. Record winner FC Bayern Munich is eliminated from the DFB Cup after penalties at second division Holstein Kiel.
15.01. The doctor Mark S. is sentenced to four years and ten months’ imprisonment and a three-year professional ban for doping.
January 18 The world ice hockey association IIHF is withdrawing co-host Belarus from the world championship this year.
24.01. Bundesliga club Hertha BSC are separating from trainer Bruno Labbadia and manager Michael Preetz. Pal Dardai takes over.
25.01. Chelsea FC is separating from head coach Frank Lampard and taking on Thomas Tuchel as his successor.
07.02. The Bundesliga game Arminia Bielefeld against Werder Bremen is canceled due to a massive onset of winter.
08.02. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers around quarterback Tom Brady win the Super Bowl for the second time in their history.
02/11 FC Bayern Munich wins the Club World Cup in Qatar.
02/15 Coach Marco Rose leaves Borussia Mönchengladbach after the season and moves to Borussia Dortmund.
02/21 The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic wins the Australian Open in Melbourne for the ninth time.
25.02. FIFA will no longer pursue the proceedings against Franz Beckenbauer, Theo Zwanziger and Horst R. Schmidt in connection with the 2006 World Cup summer fairy tale due to the statute of limitations.
02/28 FC Schalke 04 is separating from head coach Christian Gross and sports director Jochen Schneider.
02/28 The mixed ski jumping Katharina Althaus, Markus Eisenbichler, Anna Rupprecht and Karl Geiger wins gold at the home world championships in Oberstdorf.
01.03. Bundesliga newcomer Arminia Bielefeld separates from coach Uwe Neuhaus. He is followed by Frank Kramer.
06.03. Germany’s men’s ski jumping team won the gold medal at the home World Cup in Oberstdorf. Geiger and Eisenbichler are involved again.
09.03. National coach Joachim Löw announces his departure after the European Football Championship in 2021.
10.03. Thomas Bach will remain President of the International Olympic Committee for another four years.
19.03. In the Champions League draw for the quarter-finals, Bayern Paris and Dortmund Manchester City will be drawn.
March 20 No foreign spectators will be admitted to the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
23.03. Bayer Leverkusen parted ways with his coach Peter Bosz. Hannes Wolf will take over temporarily.
30.03. Bayern star Robert Lewandowski is out for weeks and the Munich team is also missing in the important Champions League phase.
04/11 1. FC Köln parted ways with coach Markus Gisdol. For him, veteran Friedhelm Funkel takes over.
April 13 Coach Adi Hütter is moving to Mönchengladbach in the summer. The next day, Fredi Bobic also announced his departure from Eintracht. He is drawn to Hertha.
April 13 Bayern Munich are eliminated from the Champions League against Paris. Dortmund also does not make it to the semi-finals.
April 15 Hertha BSC has to be closed for 14 days in quarantine after several corona cases.
04/17 Due to a corona case, the final tournament in the German basketball cup will be postponed.
04/17 Hansi Flick confirms his departure as Bayern coach at the end of the season.
April 19 Twelve top European clubs want to found a football super league. The project fails, meanwhile UEFA decides to reform the Champions League.
April 20 The relegation of FC Schalke 04 to the Bundesliga is sealed with a defeat in Bielefeld.
04/23 UEFA decides that Munich can keep all of its four European Championship games.
04/26 FC Augsburg is separating from its head coach Heiko Herrlich. Markus Weinzierl takes over for him.
04/27 Coach Julian Nagelsmann is moving from RB Leipzig to Bayern and will succeed Hansi Flick. Jesse Marsch takes over for the Saxons.
