Jakarta –
Brain-eating amoeba infection killed a man from Florida, United States. Amoeba Naegleria fowleri caused fatality and caused the man to die.
This case was first reported by the Florida Department of Health on February 23. After that, an investigation was carried out to confirm the cause of death.
On Thursday (2/3/2023), authorities said the man died from a brain-eating amoeba.
“I can confirm that the infection unfortunately resulted in death, and any additional information about this case is being withheld to protect patient privacy,” Florida Department of Health spokesman Jae Williams said in an email to AP News quoted Monday (6/3).
No information was given about the person’s condition, but infections resulting from the brain-eating amoeba are usually fatal. Previously, the health agency had issued a warning to Florida residents about infection with the brain-eating amoeba or Naegleria fowleri in January.
Allegedly due to washing the nose
Local health officials said the infection with the brain-eating amoeba was likely the result of flushing the sinuses with tap water or washing the nose. Until now, the investigation to ensure this incident is still ongoing.
They also warn that to avoid infection, people should not rinse their nasal passages with untreated tap water. To practice washing your nose, try to boil the water for at least one minute or until it boils.
Naegleria fowleri usually lives in soil and warm fresh water and can sometimes grow in water tanks, heaters and pipes.
Early signs and symptoms of infection are severe headache, fever, nausea and vomiting and may progress to a stiff neck, seizures, hallucinations and coma.
