Chronic Kidney Failure Patients Ask Covid Vaccination Priority

The vaccination policy protects not only patients with kidney failure but also medical personnel.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Dialysis Patients Community (KPCDI) urged the government to determine kidney failure patients chronic as a priority for Covid-19 vaccine recipients. The vaccination policy protects not only patients with kidney failure but also medical personnel.

“There are nurses, doctors, families of patients at home and all parties because of the high level of interaction to and from the hospital,” said Chairman of the KPCDI, Tony Richard Samosir, in a press release received in Jakarta, Monday (29/3) night.

He said chronic kidney failure patients are part of the population vulnerable to exposure to the new type of corona virus that causes Covid-19 with the death rate for end-stage kidney failure sufferers in Indonesia amounting to 250 thousand people. “The vaccination policy not only protects patients with kidney failure but also medical personnel. There are nurses, doctors, families of patients at home and all parties because of the high level of interaction to and from the hospital,” he said.

According to him, patients with chronic kidney failure must travel at least eight times a month to undergo hemodialysis therapy at the hospital. “When a kidney failure patient is exposed to Covid-19 and without symptoms, they cannot be isolated at home and must still go to the hospital for dialysis. For patients, it is more worrying if they don’t dialysis than being exposed to Covid-19. Not having dialysis. , is tantamount to giving up your life to the creator, “he said.

Insistence KPCDI This is in line with the urging of three global kidney organizations that are asking governments across countries to prioritize chronic kidney failure patients who are undergoing dialysis to get the Covid-19 vaccination. The call was previously issued by the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), The European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

The board of the Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialist Association (PB PAPDI) provides recommendations for patients with chronic kidney disease, geriatrics and cardiovascular disease to get the Covid-19 type of CoronaVac vaccination.

Meanwhile, the Director of Prevention and Control of Vector Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases of the Ministry of Health, dr Nadia Tarmizi sites Seeing that the recommendations from PAPDI do not specifically prioritize Covid-19 vaccination for patients with chronic kidney failure.

However, said Siti Nadia, patients with chronic kidney failure have already entered the target criteria for vaccination. In giving priorities for vaccination, Nadia still refers to the recommendations given by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Indonesian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ITAGI), PAPDI and the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI).

“In general, it is included in the criteria and they (patients with chronic kidney failure) will get the vaccine recipients,” he said.

Regarding the implementation of vaccination for kidney failure patients, Nadia stated that all of them will be included in the national vaccination scheme just like the others. “So please come but according to their age. If elderly people with kidney disease and age 60 can now be vaccinated. Or is the patient (by profession) a public service provider and has kidney problems, he will also get vaccinations,” said Siti Nadia Tarmizi.
