KOMPAS.com – Chronic kidney disease (PGK) is still a public health problem globally, where the incidence or prevalence is increasing.
In Indonesia, the prevalence chronic kidney disease according to the Ministry of Health’s Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) data in 2018 as many as 3.8 per 1000 population, or around 1,017,260 people.
Displayed Secretary General Indonesian Society of Hypertension (InaSH) dr. Djoko Wibisono, Sp.PD-KGH, of the total population of Indonesia who suffers from chronic kidney disease, 19.3 percent of them are recorded to undergo dialysis (hemodialysis).
“Chronic kidney disease is a condition in which the kidneys experience structural abnormalities or impaired kidney function that lasts for more than 3 months,” Djoko explained in a virtual press conference. “Then, the estimated filtration rate (eLFG) is less than 60 ml/minute and lasts more than 3 months with or without kidney damage,” he continued.
As for causes of chronic kidney disease According to Dr. Djoko, it could be due to various things, including:
- Hypertension or high blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Glumerulonephritis or inflammation of the kidneys
- High cholesterol
- Polycystic kidney disease
- Obstruction
- And the consumption of drugs
“Hypertension is dangerous because it can damage important organs ranging from the brain to stroke, blood vessels to heart attacks, and the kidneys gradually experience kidney leakage,” he said.
“If not treated, the kidneys will become sclerosis, shrink, harden, and kidney failure, and lead to death,” said Djoko.
Doctor Djoko also highlighted controlling blood pressure to avoid stroke, blindness in the eye, heart attack, and chronic kidney disease.
“Blood pressure control is very important, controlled for a lifetime, in order to stay healthy,” he added.
