Chromebooks Discover New Customization Options for RGB Keyboards

2023.08.01

Since last year, Chromebooks equipped with RGB backlight keyboards have been released in the genre of gaming Chromebooks, and since the beginning of this year, models such as the “HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook” have been equipped with RGB keyboards while emphasizing productivity. It is also appearing.

ChromeOS 117 Dev has reportedly discovered two new flags for RGB keyboards: “Multi-Zone RGB Keyboard customization” and “Experimental RGB Keyboard Patterns support.”

The Chromebook’s RGB keyboard is made up of four (or five) zones, each of which can be color-changed independently, with each zone reflecting a different default color when the rainbow option is selected in the keyboard’s settings. will be

A new flag, Multi-Zone RGB keyboard customization, allows you to assign a specific color to each zone. However, even if this flag is enabled, you will not be able to set your favorite color from the color palette, but will choose from 7 default colors. ¥

Also, in the future, a flag called “Experimental RGB Keyboard Patterns support” may allow you to freely choose the colors or lighting patterns that can be selected. This flag isn’t working yet, so I can’t confirm the actual behavior.

In the future, these functions may be applied not only to the keyboard of the Chromebook itself but also to the external keyboard. As a result, gaming devices that are supposed to be used on Windows may be able to be easily customized without drivers or software.

However, even ChromeOS 117 is still an experimental flag, so it will take a while until it is officially implemented. I still hope so.

Unfortunately, Chromebooks with RGB keyboards have not yet been released in Japan, so we are looking forward to their release. It’s been a year already.
