The parade was organized by the queer departments of the Graz universities and the RosaLila Panthers. According to Chairman Joe Niedermayer, the parade is of course taking place in the shadow of the events of June 17 at the Rainbow Parade in Vienna: three suspects who are said to have planned an attack were arrested in advance.

“Let’s not be intimidated”

“But we won’t be intimidated and we won’t be afraid. Because if that happens, these homophobic people have achieved exactly what they set out to achieve; that we hide Just like 20 years ago. But those times are over!” emphasizes Niedermayer.

“No specific threat”

The meeting point for the parade was on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the Graz city park – the route then led via the Burgring, Herrengasse, the main square and Annenstrasse to the Volksgarten.

According to police spokesman Fritz Grundnig, there was no concrete indication of an exceptional risk: “There is a risk analysis for every event. For today’s event, however, there is no specific risk or no indication of a specific risk.”

At the major event, they are working closely with the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism (LVT) and have also included the events in Vienna in the preparations: “Of course, the events in Vienna gave reason to include the whole thing in the operational concept. That means we have increased staff and also made our colleagues aware of this.”
