Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film “Oppenheimer” has emerged as the frontrunner in the nominations for the 2024 BAFTA film awards. The biographical epic has received a staggering 13 nominations, solidifying its position as a top contender. Yorgos Lanthimos’ black-comedy science fantasy “Poor Things” is not far behind, earning an impressive 11 nominations.
“Oppenheimer,” which had already garnered 15 mentions on the BAFTA longlists, is vying for recognition in various categories, including Best Film, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The star-studded cast has also received nominations, with Cillian Murphy up for Best Leading Actor, Emily Blunt for Best Supporting Actress, and Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor.
“Poor Things,” on the other hand, is nominated for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Emma Stone has been recognized for her outstanding performance and is nominated for Best Leading Actress.

Justine Triet’s Cannes-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” and Bradley Cooper’s biographical film “Maestro” have each received seven nominations.
One interesting trend among the nominees is the inclusion of several first-time BAFTA nominees. Out of the 23 nominees in the performance categories, 11 are receiving their first BAFTA film nominations. This year, BAFTA has made a conscious effort to recognize diverse talent, with six of the first-time nominees being from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
The BAFTA Rising Stars winners are also making their mark in the nominations. Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, Margot Robbie, and Barry Keoghan, all former Rising Stars winners, have received nominations in various categories.
The competition is fierce in the leading actress category, with Fantasia Barrino, Sandra Hüller, Carey Mulligan, Vivian Oparah, Margot Robbie, and Emma Stone vying for the award. For leading actor, Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, Barry Keoghan, Cillian Murphy, and Teo Yoo are in contention.
The awards ceremony will take place on February 18th at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The event will be hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant and will be broadcasted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK. International audiences can catch the ceremony on streamer BritBox.
The BAFTA nominations showcase a diverse range of films that explore various genres and tell compelling stories. The films and talented individuals nominated represent the best of British and global filmmaking. With such a strong field of contenders, it will be an exciting night to see who takes home the prestigious BAFTA awards.
