Christopher Nolan calls Tenet’s argument pro cinema

Director Christopher Nolan fears that film studios will draw the wrong conclusions from the box office of his film Tenet. That was the only blockbuster to come out when corona measures were relaxed this summer.

The film raised 294 million euros. That’s less than he would in a normal year, but it also means he’s almost out of the cost. A film has to yield twice its budget to break even, because half of the receipts go to the cinema.

Tenet cost 172 million. Nolan notes that 294 million is much more than was thought possible in a pandemic.

But he fears that Tenet will be used as an excuse not to release other films in theaters. The film industry now has to adapt to new circumstances and rebuild itself, he says in the Los Angeles Times. ‘It is unfair to test Tenet’s performance against the standards of 2019, an absolute record year for the film industry.’

Nolan especially does not want the studios to drop the cinemas. ‘Going to the cinema is part of life, like restaurants and so many things. Everyone has to adapt to a new reality. ‘
